Character Collaboration

The Grade 2’s and 3’s have teamed up again! This time they have been working on understanding and developing characters. For the introductory lesson, the kids listened to a fantastic story called Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell and listened carefully for juicy describing words. Afterwards, we talked about how the author used adjectives to paint a picture of the characters personality, and that the verbs describing Molly’s actions also told us about her character. Before the lesson began, the children looked at their learning objectives and put them into their own words to better understand their learning goals. In our follow-up lesson, the kids went on a little scavenger hunt to find adjectives and verbs. Working with a partner, they separated their words into adjectives and verbs on chart paper and created interesting sentences using their words. After sharing with everyone, the kids now have a huge bank of describing and action words with which they will be able to create their own characters. We look forward to creating characters in our final group lesson. This collaboration was such a fun and exciting way to expand vocabulary and practice skills to develop a character in a story!
