The Grade 3 class made their annual trip to Chinatown last Thursday for Chinese New Year. They were so busy having fun that Emily only had time to take one picture! (Here they are browsing in one of the stores along the way.)
The trip serves many purposes – it a reason to get on the TTC and practise navigation skills, a chance to use money in a real life situation (rounding up and down is a skill the children had to call on as they paid for their own things), and a chance to explore Chinese culture in the city. The children spotted lots of Chinese New Year decorations in the stores, including lisee (the little red envelopes for good luck money), feng shui coins and banners with the Chinese character Fu, meaning fortune or good luck.
