Organizing Math Thinking in Grade 3

The Grade 3 class has been working hard on learning different problem solving strategies. They have a solid understanding of the four steps of problem solving: Understand, Plan, Solve, and Reflect, and have been learning different strategies to help them solve word problems effectively. So far, we have worked through the strategies of: Solving a Simpler Problem, Making a Table or Chart, and Making an Organized List, and the kids have loved it! Learning and practising these strategies not only helps them to develop a deeper understanding of mathematical operations (we have been focusing on multiplication and division), but also helps them to realize that they can succeed, even when faced with a difficult problem, if they try their best, use their prior knowledge, and never, ever give up!

Way to go, Grade 3 Mathematicians!
