A Heroic Week for Terry

It’s that exciting time of the year again at CGS as we gear up for our annual Terry Fox Walk happening Friday morning Oct 6th! This annual event is not just about walking or running, but about celebrating the incredible legacy of Terry Fox, a Canadian hero who inspired millions with his Marathon of Hope. CGS has been annually fundraising and participating in the Terry Fox School Walk for 25 years! It has been a part of our school’s ongoing community involvement and we are so proud of so far raising over $250,000 over the last 25 years for the Terry Fox Foundation (TFF) for cancer research!  Join us as we take you through the week leading up to this meaningful event where we talk all about heroism!

Our week began with guest speaker from one of the TFF members, Shea, where he told us all about Terry Fox and his inspiring journey. We learned how he battled cancer and, despite losing his leg, embarked on a cross-country run to raise money for cancer research. His determination and selflessness is truly admirable and declared him a Canadian Hero. We also heard the inspiring personal story of why Shea is a part of the foundation because of his late grandmother, who passed from cancer when Shea was only 5 years old. It was an emotional but motivating day that reminded us why we’re doing this walk. He talked to us about the importance of fundraising for cancer research, and why we do it year after year. Lastly, Shea got us all pumped up and ready for our big walk with a school wide cheer! We couldn’t help but feel inspired!

All week our students have been discussing “What is a hero?”, and why Terry Fox is regarded as a Canadian hero. With open classroom discussions on what characteristics make a hero, and what types of acts make a hero, our classrooms have been taken over by the positive and inspiring acts of Terry Fox and the understanding that everyone has a little bit of hero inside. We have had loads of literacy activities from our older grades where they dove deep into why they think Terry is a hero, along with tons of colourful hero crafts and colouring sheets from all our classrooms! Our school corridors are now covered with colourful Terry Fox themes activities filled with inspiring messages all from our students!

It’s not Terry Fox week without matching T-shirts, right? All our students were encouraged to wear their Terry Fox Shirts from any of the past years to keep the spirit of Terry alive and buzzing throughout the school. It is so incredible to see so much participation. We are also so excited for the big reveal of this years new Terry fox T-shirt inspired and designed by Canadian actor, Ryan Reynolds! We’re all excited to show them off on the big day!

Decked out in our specially Terry T-shirts, we will join together Friday Morning as a giant school and loving community, and walk with enthusiasm and determination. This week of prepping has been such a heartwarming experience, knowing that we were contributing to cancer research, just like Terry Fox did. Donations for our CGS school fundraising page is open until Oct 13th and we are encouraging all families, friends and our CGS community past and present to consider contributing to our goal. Every cent counts! We’re so pumped up and ready to make a difference!
