A Love for Reading

At CGS, encouragement for reading is everywhere!

Each classroom is a reading friendly environment with a dedicated reading/library space to welcome every student from pre-readers to accelerated readers. Reading is an essential part of every day, whether it’s in preschool or the upper grades of CGS, we keep age-appropriate books at the ready for all, and encourage reading for FUN!

We support reading that challenges our students at every level, yet our encouragement of reading for pleasure is what we believe makes a long-lasting, lifetime lover of reading and books.

Every Friday, the Early Start students gather on the main floor for Library Time. The main library on the 3rd floor is where our upper grade students eagerly and excitedly borrow books from our collection. Did you know that new books are purchased and added to our Library each term by Principal Marie? Thank you, Zandée and Jen for keeping our CGS Library organized and maintained!

Today we welcomed visiting author, Kathy DeFranco who shared her story of “Peaky Peakster, A Wildlife Tale”. The excitement of having the books’ author with us was incredible, and Kathy even shared activities to encourage math, writing, word-building, and a fun word-search.

For decades now – even longer – we know the dramatic and exceptionally positive link between reading for fun and better cognition, mental health, and academic retainment in the early years. Check out this great article to illustrate the benefits of reading for all ages: article from the Markham Public Library.

“Reading is an important part of Canadian life,
not just as a source of lifelong pleasure or as a creative or cultural pastime.
Reading is the foundation of learning.
It increases emotional intelligence and helps people navigate diverse opinions, ideas, and experiences.”
