Cool Kids Beat the Heat!

Boy is it HOT here in Toronto! Summer brings with it long days of sunshine and boundless outdoor adventures. However, sometimes the heat can be too intense, turning a fun-filled day into an uncomfortable experience. Heatwaves can be especially challenging for kids, as their bodies are more sensitive to extreme temperatures. But don’t you worry! We have some super ‘cool’ tips to help all kids beat the heat the best way they can and enjoy the summer to the fullest.

First things first, hydrate hydrate hydrate! When the sun is scorching, staying hydrated becomes even more critical. Encourage your kids to drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if they don’t feel particularly thirsty. Preparing fun and colourful water bottles helps to make drinking water exciting and aids in keeping track of their water intake.

Keep cool by looking ‘cool’. By that we mean remember to wear loose, lightweight, and light-coloured clothing which can work great in helping keep kids cool during a heatwave. Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton, and don’t forget the wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses to shield them from the sun’s rays. There are also UV protective clothing! You will see a lot of these available in kids swim attire, but we are seeing them integrated into summer clothing fabrics as well.

Try avoiding direct sun exposure when the heat is sizzlin’ through the day. Plan activities in shaded areas like parks with ample trees or set up a cozy outdoor tent or umbrella to create a shaded retreat.

A fan favourite: you can beat the heat with some good old-fashioned water play! Set up a kiddie pool in the backyard, have a water balloon fight, or turn on the sprinklers for some watery excitement. Visit your local public pool for some additional cool off summer time fun too! It’s a fantastic way for kids to have fun while staying cool.

Don’t forget all the exciting and delicious cooling and hydrating treats! Watermelon, oranges, and berries make for great hydrating treats. Get creative with frozen treats too! Prepare healthy and tasty popsicles using fresh fruits and juices, or make your own frozen yogurt bites. These treats will not only be delicious but will also help keep your kids refreshed.

On the hottest days, consider spending time indoors, where it’s easier to control the temperature. Engage in indoor activities such as board games, arts and crafts, or watching a favourite movie together. If you have access to air conditioning or electric fans, definitely use them to keep indoor spaces cool and comfortable. Sleeping in a well-ventilated and cooler room will help your kids get a good night’s sleep as well during these hot and humid summer nights.

Heatwaves may be challenging, but with a little creativity and some planning, kids can still have a fantastic time during the summer. Remember, safety comes first, so stay hydrated, seek shady spots, and find fun ways to beat the heat together! By following some of these tips, you and your kids can enjoy the summer while staying cool and safe in even the hottest weather. So, keep up those summer adventures!
