JK Spotlight

JK has had an exciting week! The students continued their work on letters, and focussed on the letter V. The highlight of the week was an awesome experiment involving volcanoes, vinegar, and lava. The class talked about the V sounds in all of those words, then talked about the shape of the volcano to make a connection to their inquiry into three dimensional shapes. This type of cross curricular activity is great for helping students to make connections with their learning. The teachers introduced the materials to be used in the experiment. The kids did a “smell and tell” with the vinegar. Their faces say it all!

After looking at the materials, the class made predictions about what they thought would happen when the materials were mixed together. They talked about what would happen when they mixed red and yellow. Making predictions and observations is an important part of the inquiry process and is a great way to introduce even young students to science.

When it was experiment time, the kids were so excited to watch the volcano in action!
