Kitchen Chemistry in SK

As part of our Social Studies unit on Canadian Heritage and Legacy, the SK’s have been focusing on the staple foods that the pioneers would have cooked. The children chose apple crisp, pumpkin pie, corn muffins, butter, pancakes, and waffles to bake during Kitchen Chemistry, as many of these foods are still enjoyed today. The students’ interest in cooking in the past and present promoted a scientific discussion regarding solids, liquids, and gases. We explored how physical and chemical changes can alter various states of matter, and discovered the challenges the pioneers would have faced without the kitchen appliances that we have today.
