Mental Health and Wellness Day at CGS

Each term at CGS we set aside a day to take a break from our usual routine. Our Founder and Principal, Marie encourages every educator to participate in CGS Mental Health and Wellness Day by providing opportunities to pause from the traditional academic school day.

Early childhood is an important time for developing healthy habits for life. We want to support our CGS students as they learn to appreciate the value in taking a step back, practicing mindfulness, and focussing on the importance of self-care.

Each grade participates in an extended yoga class with Mai and we stress the value of practicing exercises like conscious breathing, and using our mind to help us relax.

Did you know that social and emotional health is considered the best foundation for mental, emotional and physical wellness?

Last week the Government of Canada announced a $7.5 million investment in the mental health of Canadian Youth:

“The mental health challenges young people are facing have increased in recent years. Whether its challenges at home, online or at school, we are committed to ensure support is available to our kids when they need it.”

As a country, investing in our children is necessary and integral to a healthy society, and as a community, we can make a big impact, too. Children often learn by watching and observing. When parents practice healthy coping strategies like mindfulness, relaxation, and positive communication, their children are more likely to develop those skills too.

When is the last time you took a break from your routine and did something just for the pure joy of it? When you do, make sure your children see that you, too, value the importance of taking time for yourself, exploring your own interests and contributing to your own wellness. Everyday.
