It’s a happy coincidence that the JK, Grade 1 and Grade 2/3 classes are all working on their money units at the same time. It is interesting to see the progression – the JK’s are learning Canadian coin values. They’re having fun practicing by playing store and earning ‘money’ for things like free play in the classroom. The Grade 1’s are reviewing coin values (no bills yet) up to $20. Learning about quarters presents the challenge of counting by 25’s which is a new skill for the children. They are also working on word problems. For the Grade 2/3’s it’s values up to $200 using coins and bills. The Grade 3’s have the added challenge of adding amounts and learning how to make change.
