This week the Grade 3’s have begun their Multiplication and Division unit in math. As an introductory lesson, we discussed what multiplication really means. They came up with some excellent ways to describe multiplication, including “adding the same thing again and again” and “groups of”. They then were given stickers and created groups of different numbers and wrote the corresponding multiplication sentence. It is so important that they develop an understanding of the concept of multiplication as repeated addition, as well as amassing a bank of known multiplication facts. By having a focus on understanding math problems, they are developing their skills to dig deeper into their math problems, and to look for patterns in the bigger picture. Exercising these problem solving muscles ultimately helps them to become persevering problem-solvers for life.
