Spiders Are Helpful

After investigating spider facts, the SK’s decided that they aren’t harmful, creepy crawlies (as they originally thought) but that they are helpful creatures. Spiders eat flies and mosquitos and get rid of other bugs that carry germs. The children discovered many interesting facts. They were particularly intrigued by female black widow spiders because they eat the males. Trapdoor spiders are also amazing because they actually open doors! The children learned that there are four different kinds of spider silk and that it is stronger than steel. They recorded these cool facts and more on their ‘spiders can, have, are’ worksheets. The unit concluded with the children making their own spider creations to decorate the classroom for Halloween.
